About Our Organization

Big Brothers Big Sisters, founded in 1904, is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. We have been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. We accomplish our mission through three core programs:

Community-based matches - Volunteers provide Littles with one-on-one time and attention in their communities, typically two to four times a month. During these unstructured outings they cultivate relationships that provide children with skills to manage every day challenges. Through simple friendship, Bigs experience the joy of helping children discover a world of possibilities and opportunities.

School-based mentoring - Volunteers provide Littles with one-on-one time and attention in their schools, typically once a week during the academic year. Teachers identify children who can benefit most from interaction with a caring adult or older student. As their friendships evolve, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. We currently have a program within the Moorestown School District that serves close to 50 children using high school students as mentors for 9th graders and middle school students.

One example of our many successful matches is Big Sister Lexy Mitchell and Little Sister Debbie Hill. They were matched in 1976. Debbie was eight and Lexy was eighteen at the time. Over the years, Debbie and Lexy have grown together, they were even there for each other when each of them got married, they watched one another have children and they are now business partners. Debbie claims that Lexy saved her life in many ways. We have many success stories like that.

Kids need a mentor, friend and a positive role model and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Burlington, Camden & Gloucester Counties fulfills that need for many children.
